The Contour

A lot of you have written into the blog asking questions about abdominal training and development.  I've recently been incorporating The Contour into my ab training with good success.

Here are some common questions culled from their website:

Question: Does this really work?
Answer: This technology has been used in the medical industry for over 30 years. Physical therapists and doctors use it to fix or rehabilitate muscles. The Contour is different because it has been re-engineered to be used on healthy muscles that have become weak and lost their firmness. This technology is called Electro Muscle Stimulation or EMS. The difference between a product used by doctors and therapists and Contour is that Contour is easier to use, more comfortable and more powerful.

Question: How does it work?
Answer: The Contour works a lot like the brain. The brain sends a signal to your muscles and they flex and relax depending on what you are doing. The Contour bypasses the brain and sends a signal directly to your muscles, telling them to flex and relax too. But the Contour can perform the perfect repetition each time. No getting lazy. No wondering if you are getting a great workout. No worries about hurting yourself by lifting too much weight.

Question: I still don't understand how it works?
Answer: The Contour is like a pacemaker. A pacemaker is designed to work on the heart muscles. It causes the heart to contract and relax. The Contour does the same thing, only it works on the outside of your body and on your major muscles. It does the work; you get the results.

Question: How soon before I can see results?
Answer: Results are dependent on many factors. Increasing strength or power can happen relatively fast and the speed of improvement is proportional to the intensity level. The higher the intensity; the faster the results. Increasing muscle tone or improving shape is more subjective. Diet or proper eating habits play a vital role to any visual changes desired. The Contour Core Sculpting System uses an eating plan that will enable a person to safely lose body fat while maintaining muscle mass. Since over 50% of the body fat is right beneath the skin, as bad fat is decreased, the muscles will be more visible and thus any change in shape or muscle tone will be more evident. That being said, some results will occur immediately after the first session. Other results will take more time. It is reasonable to notice a variety of results in 2-3 weeks. The longer the product is used and the higher the intensity will enable faster results. Please keep in mind there is a point of diminished return and more is not always better. Exercising smart means choosing the appropriate level of intensity that you can comfortably tolerate on a consistent basis.

Peter Adonis: Jack, the contour can help your wife tone her midsection, but for her inner thighs she would need to do cardio (to reduce bodyfat), and train legs 1x a week including the adductor, abductor machines.

jack: I want to get one of the contour ab system to build my core, have a bad weak back. My question is my wife could benefit from it also, but she asks what will happen to her thighs? Does she have to do some work on her lower body section? Thanks!

DeterminedGuy: I really want to have a six pack, but do not know how to truly go about it. I have tried the crunches to get them, but it does not feel like to me its helping. I am a 5' 10"-5' 11" guy and I weigh about 155lbs. What can/should I do to get some abs? Your looking great btw, congrats

Peter Adonis: NavyMike - I'm not sponsored by The Contour, and my abs are the result of eating clean, and proper training. The Contour is just a supplement to all of that, an addition to, but not the primary focus.

NavyMike: Hi Peter. I'm enjoy the great workout and eating tips you provide for us...but I am usually skeptical about products that promote results without hard work. Is this company sponsoring you, or am I to believe the beautiful abs that you've always had is the byproduct of using the Contour? Keep up the great work on your site.
