Egg White Lunch
Posted on Saturday December 08, 2007 by Pete

I had fun yesterday doing the first cooking video for the site.  I made an egg white lunch.  It consisted of 1 egg, egg whites, spinach/romaine lettuce, feta cheese, black pepper.  I also had 1 piece of whole wheat bread and a banana.  This is part of The Athenian Diet, if it were The Spartan Diet it would just have been the egg whites and spinach/romaine lettuce, black pepper (no whole egg, no feta, no whole wheat bread, no banana).

The pasteurized egg whites are great to keep in your fridge, because they have so many uses.  You can go the Rocky route and actually drink them without fear of salmonella because they have been pasteurized - you can use them as a base for a protein shake instead of milk or water, or you can cook them as I did.  So, I would recommend everyone to keep them in their fridge whether they are on The Athenian, The Theban or The Spartan diet.

Egg Yolks:

  • Calories: 55 cals
  • Fat: 4.5 g
  • Saturated Fat: 1.6g
  • Cholesterol: 210 mg
  • Protein: 2.7g

Egg Whites:

  • Calories: 17 cals
  • Fat: 0.1 g
  • Saturated Fat: 0.0 g
  • Cholesterol: 0.0 mg
  • Protein: 5 g

Notice that the majority of the protein, 5 grams are in the white, not the yolk.  It also has less calories, less fat, less satured fat and less cholesterol.  So, it's an easy choice for someone interested in fitness between the whole egg and the egg white.  The reason I put the 1 egg into the mix is for the taste as well as that it has lutein, which is great for your eyes.

Paul: I was reading what is on the Spartan diet. Have to say I was using something very similar to that and I lost 30 lbs. I feel great and I don't miss any flavor in foods. Also I do not use any butter in any cooking except for 2 dishes that I prepare for holidays. It is good diet.

Benjamin: In my opinion egg whites are the best protein available! I never thought to mix an egg with the egg beaters... Great Info, very helpful! Thanks Peter!

JoInPhilly: Egg whites are fantastic for protein, and they add some fun to cooked broccoli, spinach (as Peter mentioned), zucchini, carrots, mushrooms and peas. All or some of these mixed with skim milk, water, or even some chicken broth from last nights left over soup pot. I normally do 2 egg whites for breakfast with one or more of the veggies mentioned above. If a friend shares a cheesesteak, I only take a little bit to mix with my egg whites for flavor. Hey! I am from Philly so I have to keep the "old school" flavor when eating healthy in order to keep looking and feeling good. Another tip is to add 1/2 teaspoon of bacon bits to whites whites mixed with any of the above for flavor. Don't forget the black pepper and a little shake of salt is ok!
